why did napoleon lose the battle at beresina?
any help is appreciated =)
Napoleon lost the battle because he was only fighting a delaying action to ensure the majority of his army could cross the Beresina river. While his engineers built two bridges in water that was only a few degrees away from the freezing point, Napoleon and his generals fought back Russians armies on both sides of the river. Napoleon’s forces were outnumbered and nearly dead from the cold and starvation. His troops could barely march but were incredibly able to muster the strength to hold the Russians back long enough for the army and many of the stragglers to cross. This battle showed the strength and loyalty of Napoleon’s soldiers in terrible circumstances. It also showed how even in defeat Napoleon could accomplish the seemingly impossible.
