“Be England what she will, With all her faults she is my country still.”…British or English?
England is NOT the United Kingdom. England is one of the countries in the United Kingdom. England is not Great Britain. Great Britain is all the countries of the United Kingdom – Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England. Even the European Union Map did not show England as an independent nation in its own right. England was described under “other European Union regions”. What a disgrace! We are not just regions – we are a country and our name is England. It appears that England is gradually being erased from maps and documents and pressure is being applied to erase it from the minds of the English people. We are very rarely referred to as English anymore but British. Politicians appear to be trying to make us ashamed to call ourselves English rather than British and many of them at the top of government seem to denigrate England and the English at any opportunity..i read an article saying there is no such thing as English? the english are british? wondered on ppls thoughts…
It is high time that the people who feel that they are English made a stand for themselves, since the Welsh and the Scots have done so by demanding their own parliament, gaining their own privileges whilst the English are being steam rolled into non entity. Why should the English pay prescription charges whilst the Welsh do not? Why should English students have to pay for their studies when the Scots do not? Why are there members of the Scottish parliament allowed to vote both in their parliament and in the English one as well whilst their English counterparts cannot walk into Edinburgh and cast votes about Scottish laws? Why is England allowing itself to be ruled by Scots?
Until the advent of the EEC the English had a very definite identity. Yes, England had been a melting pot of several civilisations, but it had developed its own character and way of life which where both endearing and original. Now the English are being erased by Big Brother America and other nations in the name of globalisation. They are fast losing customs and traditions and the qualities that made them very special. Sadly the enemy is within now, as too many people go with the flow and have stopped caring.. Added to which our politicians have failed to monitor adequately the inflow of immigrants who are not prepared to embrace the traditions and customs inherent to the English way of life. Snakes and bosoms come very much to mind.
The questions are “What can be done about it ?” and “Will those who care make a stand and be counted?”. Probably not because the “live and let live” gentlemanly precept of the true English puts them at a disadvantage.
